This is not a very good sign for sevice desk with interim people who are wanting an alternative like Rememdy and Siebel to name a few. We will see how things work out in the next few years.

Microsoft released an updated version of FTP server that will work with Windows Server 2008 latest release RC0. This might not be a big deal to most but one of the features that I found interesting was the Shared Hosting environments. This means that once you have created a specific site you can have a FTP services directly connected to the site. This is huge from many angles one being the Front Page Service extensions. Anyone in the hosting business knows that this was a problem from the get go and it only took them 3 Server Operating systems later to fix it. You can secure FTP now and allow better functionality now. Not that Share Hosting is a booming business now. Most hosters have actually tried to get away from Shared Hostings but as things are moving forward the large Telco’s of the world that are already offering free web pages will be able to do this with ease.

FTP 7 (x86) http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=87847

FTP 7 (x64) http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=89114

Required settings and software.

RC0 is the only version that FTP 7 will work on. Should work on any releases after as well.

IIS 7.0 has to be installed

Shared configuration environment has to be disabled prior to FTP installation

FTP has to be installed running as Administrator so remember RUNAS

Previous versions of FTP have to be uninstalled prior to FTP7 installation.

Interesting site that will provide assistance.

http://www.iis.net (Actually Microsoft but many smart people who deal with IIS or have in the past)

If you actually use the product you will need additional resources to be able to run the virtual machines. Typically the same requirement for the application goes for each of the guest VM’s that you need to build. The minimum requirements are just that and it means that whatever you build will run very slow so unless that is all you have to work with I would suggest no less than 512MB for RAM on clients and 1GB RAM for servers and at least 10GB HDD for each VM as a practice.
